the media and gender equality

We are influenced by everything that we hear, see and read. We are influenced by

edia - television, films, videos, newspapers, magazines, and radio.
The media reaches millions of people and convinces us to buy products.

In pairs/groups look at some pictures of women in a few magazines, look at this ad and at this suggested site archive of pictures.

**As a class, choose one advertisement that is especially stereotypical and protest against it.
Send a letter to the newspaper/television or any other body which is responsible for it. This sample letter might help you:

To whome it may concern,

Your advertising makes me sick! It insults and exploits women and promotes the use of women as inhuman objects. I do not want to look the way you make women look in your advertising. I will not buy any of your products and I will encourage others to boycott your company until you change your advertising focus. It's time to realize that women don't want to see this kind of oppression and objectification in the media anymore. I am one of these women.
