Moses Ascends to the Mountain

G-d said to Moses, "Come up to Me, to the mountain, and remain there. I will give you the stone tablets, the Torah and the commandment that I have written for the people's instruction."

                          - Exodus 24:12

On Shavuot we celebrate the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai.

Shavuot falls on the fiftieth day after the beginning of Passover.

Shavuot comes seven weeks after Pesah.
Shavuot is a holiday that tells two stories.
Shavuot tells the story of the
giving of the Torah; It helps us remember Mt. Sinai and the time when God spoke the Ten Commandments to all of Israel.

Shavuot also tells the story of the
yearly harvest in Eretz Yisrael. It helps us remember when all Jews made a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. It helps us remember when we brought our bikkurim, first fruit, to the Temple.
Shavuot comes near the end of the school year.
We end our year of learning with a Torah celebration and a harvest.

               Shavuot has three names:
              Chag HaShavuot
(The Feast of Weeks)
Chag HaBikurim  (The Festival of First Fruits)
              Chag HaKatzir       (The Harvest Festival)
